# Charleston on foot from 80 Society Street

**Base:** 80 Society Street, Charleston, SC 29401, United States
**Researched:** September 17, 2026

**Church and Union Charleston is included as map stop 97:** 32B North Market Street, approximately **10–14 minutes / 0.5 mile** on foot. It is featured in the map and makes an easy City Market brunch or dinner choice. [Charleston location, menus and reservations](https://www.churchandunion.com/location/charleston/)

Your location gives you a particularly convenient base for King Street, the City Market, Marion Square and the historic district. Many useful stops are less than ten minutes away; even the Battery is a reasonable outing on foot.

This is a detailed visitor guide to **121 places**, including restaurants, coffee and desserts, bars, museums, historic sites, parks, shops, entertainment and practical services. It is broad coverage of the walkable visitor area, not a claim to list every business, private property or temporary event. One restaurant is explicitly marked **reopening to confirm**. Some entries share a building, such as the bars and café at Hotel Bennett.

Event listings refer to the published 2026 calendars. Check individual dates and current availability before booking.

## Files and how to use them

- **charleston-walking-map.html:** The companion interactive map. Download and open it in a browser. It contains the same numbered places as this guide, a home marker, category and distance filters, search, and individual walking-direction links. Numbered clusters expand as you zoom. Pins sharing a building spread apart at close zoom.
- **This Markdown guide:** Read it offline, search by venue name or map number, and use the source links when you want current menus or tickets.
- **charleston-places.csv:** Optional companion list for a spreadsheet or import into Google My Maps. Import latitude and longitude as location fields and Name as the title.

The map's bundled street lines, parks, pins and details work offline. The optional online street-map layer, venue websites and Google Maps directions require internet. Keep the files on your phone or laptop before traveling; no account is needed for the local map.

## Understanding walking times and budgets

All listed walking times are **one way from your Airbnb**, without sightseeing, shopping or waiting in line. Most stops are roughly 0.1–1.1 miles away. Xiao Bao Biscuit and Leon's are in the longer-walk group; Mercantile & Mash is near the outer edge of the main range. Lewis Barbecue is included as a destination worth knowing about, but it is clearly labeled as a rideshare or roughly 40–55 minute walk each way.

Distances are planning estimates calculated from approximate address coordinates and an OpenStreetMap street network, **not live navigation or verified accessible routes**. Times use approximately 3 mph with an allowance for a slower pace and crossings. Address interpolation can place a pin along the frontage instead of at the entrance. Add time for traffic signals, crowds, cobbles, stairs and detours; double the walk for a return trip. Open the individual walking-direction link for the current pedestrian route. Treat the far end of each time range as the better planning number.

**Food/drink budget scale, per person before tax, tip and alcohol unless it is a bar:** $ = usually under $20 for a simple stop; $$ = roughly $20–40; $$$ = roughly $40–75; $$$$ = $75+ or a splurge meal. These are my planning bands, not quoted menus. A coffee can cost much less, and a seafood tower or several cocktails can cost much more. Museum and event tickets are marked separately; published prices can change.

**Visit length** is my suggested time at the destination and does not include the walk there. A restaurant queue can add substantially more. “Free exterior” does not promise entry to a building or private garden.

## Local event schedule

These are published schedules found during research, not reservations or guarantees of remaining tickets. All times below are Charleston local time.

| Date | Option | Where / walking access | Planning note |
|---|---|---|---|
| **Wed Oct. 28** | Preservation Society Fall Tours calendar includes **Tax, Tyranny, and Palmetto Trees**; additional walking-tour series also span this date. | Meeting point depends on the tour. | Buy in advance and follow the confirmation's departure address. A calendar listing does not establish remaining availability. [Fall Tours calendar](https://www.preservationsociety.org/fall-tours/) |
| **Thu Oct. 29, 7:30pm** | **CSO Pops 1: The Witching Hour** | **79 Gaillard**, 95 Calhoun; about 8–13 min. | A Halloween-season orchestral program drawing on classical, film and Broadway music. [Official event](https://gaillardcenter.org/events/cso-pops-1-the-witching-hour/) |
| **Fri Oct. 30** | **Residences and Sites of the Revolution: 18th Century Downtown**, a Fall Tours house-and-garden outing. | South of Broad; check-in location provided by organizer. | Published general house-and-garden pricing: $100 nonmember / $75 member. Verify this specific tour's time, access and availability. [Official registration](https://join.preservationsociety.org/a/revsites-1030) |
| **Fri Oct. 30, 7:30pm** | **An Evening with David Sedaris** | **79 Gaillard**, about 8–13 min. | Published runtime 75–90 minutes without intermission, with signing opportunities. [Official event](https://gaillardcenter.org/events/david-sedaris-2026/) |
| **Sat Oct. 31, 8am–2pm** | **Charleston Farmers Market** | **44 Marion Square**, about 5–9 min to the Meeting Street side. | The city's published 2026 Saturday season includes this date. Check weather/cancellation updates during the trip. [City schedule](https://www.charleston-sc.gov/3305/Farmers-Market) |
| **Fri Oct. 30 / Sat Oct. 31 evenings** | **City Market Night Market**, advertised regular Friday/Saturday pattern, 6:30–10:30pm. | **43 City Market**, about 5–9 min to the Meeting Street end. | Treat this as the regular schedule, not a separately confirmed Halloween special event. Check the date before going. [Market website](https://www.thecharlestoncitymarket.com/) |
| **Oct. 28–Nov. 1** | Charleston Stage presents **Broadway Bound, Oct. 14–Nov. 1**, and a family production **Miss Nelson Is Missing!** on Oct. 31. | **77 Dock Street Theatre**, about 11–16 min. | Consult individual performance times and age guidance. A production run does not mean a show every day. [2026–27 season](https://charlestonstage.com/shows-and-tickets/) |
| **Thu Oct. 29–Sun Nov. 1** | **Afternoon tea at Camellias** | **37 Hotel Bennett**, about 8–12 min. | The hotel's recurring calendar covers these dates. Published $80/adult and $55/child; reserve and disclose dietary needs. Verify seating times because the hotel's overview and event page differ. [Tea calendar](https://www.hotelbennett.com/activities/event-calendar/afternoon-tea-at-camellias) |
| **Sun Nov. 1, 5pm** | **The Complete Philip Glass Piano Etudes** | **79 Gaillard**, about 8–13 min. | Only if you are staying into the evening. Published runtime about 2½ hours; tickets from $57. Philip Glass himself is not scheduled to perform. [Official event](https://gaillardcenter.org/events/philip-glass-piano-etudes/) |

For Halloween atmosphere, a **downtown ghost walking tour** is a practical option. Choose the actual route and age suitability, and verify its starting point. Bulldog's downtown office is mapped as **83**, but the office is not necessarily where your tour begins. Avoid accidentally booking an offering at Patriots Point if you want to stay entirely on foot. [Bulldog Tours](https://www.bulldogtours.com/)

**Clock change:** daylight saving time ends early Sunday, November 1, 2026. The clock moves back an hour. Saturday evening and Sunday evening will have noticeably different sunset clock times, so check before scheduling a final rooftop visit. [Charleston sun and clock-change information](https://www.timeanddate.com/sun/usa/charleston-sc?month=11)

## Reservations and closures to handle first

1. **Choose your main dinner dates.** Look first at FIG, Husk, Halls, The Ordinary, Hank's, Le Farfalle and Chez Nous; book directly through the restaurant's own link when dates open. Do not fill every evening with a hard-to-move reservation.
2. **The Ordinary publishes a 28-day release at noon.** For Oct. 28, 29, 30, 31 and Nov. 1, that corresponds to **Sept. 30, Oct. 1, Oct. 2, Oct. 3 and Oct. 4**, respectively. The site calls the time “EST”; use the restaurant's Charleston-local booking display and check the release policy rather than manually converting that wording. [Reservation policy](https://eattheordinary.com/reservations/)
3. **167 Raw is walk-in only and closed Sunday.** Plan it Wednesday–Saturday. Chubby Fish also does not take normal advance reservations and is closed Sunday; Xiao Bao Biscuit is likewise closed Sunday on its published schedule. [167 Raw](https://www.167rawoysterbar.com/), [Chubby Fish](https://www.chubbyfishcharleston.com/events), [Xiao Bao](https://www.xiaobaobiscuit.com/)
4. **Peninsula Grill is conditional.** Its official page currently says it is closed for renovation and expects to reopen in fall. There is no specific reopening date on the page checked. Keep another dinner option until your dates are explicitly bookable and the restaurant confirms service. [Current notice](https://peninsulagrill.com/)
5. **Book tours and performances before arranging meals around them.** Add a buffer of at least 30 minutes between finishing dinner and a seated show; more if you dislike rushing.
6. **Sunday requires a little care.** IAAM's detailed visitor page says noon opening from July 2026; the Children's Museum also opens at noon, Blue Bicycle at 1pm, and Harken closes at 1pm. The SCHS Museum closes Sundays. Check the actual booking calendars. The detailed place entries below link the sources.
7. **Sorelle dining-room reservations open 60 days ahead.** The daytime mercato, bar and lounge provide more flexible first-come alternatives. [Sorelle information](https://www.sorellecharleston.com/about/)
8. **Reserve sushi if it matters.** 167 Sushi Bar and Shiki are small; 167 accepts reservations and walk-ins, while Shiki publishes separate lunch and dinner services and closes Sunday and Monday.
9. **If you want a Candlefish workshop, do it before your last day.** Candles normally need next-day pickup. [Workshop information](https://www.candlefish.com/)

## A realistic five-day outline

This is a flexible suggestion, not an attempt to fit all 121 stops into four nights. Pick **one major paid attraction plus one neighborhood walk per full day**. Daily mileages below are rough activity-planning ranges including out-and-back movement, not measured itineraries; museums, detours and shopping can add more steps.

### Day 1 — settle in and orient yourselves

- Drop bags, then do a light loop through **King Street, Hasell Street and the City Market**. Make the **Harris Teeter** or **CVS** run now if needed.
- Coffee or a snack at **The Rise**, **Caviar & Bananas**, **Handy & Hot**, **Christophe**, **Babas on Wentworth** or **Clerks**.
- Dinner at **Muse** is the simplest arrival-night option. **FIG** is nearby if you secure it and your arrival is dependable.
- Optional **The Watch** rooftop or **Theatre 99**, subject to its calendar.
- Plan roughly **1–2 miles** of casual walking. If you arrive late, keep this to dinner and one short stroll.

### Day 2 — French Quarter, waterfront and the Battery

- Breakfast at **Harken** or **Millers All Day**, then choose **Old Slave Mart**, **Gibbes** or **Old Exchange** rather than trying to do all three in one morning.
- Continue through **Church Street / Chalmers Street**, **Waterfront Park**, **Rainbow Row**, **East Battery** and **White Point Garden**. Return via **Meeting Street** and, if desired, **Nathaniel Russell House**.
- Lunch at **Fleet Landing**, **S.N.O.B.**, **Poogan's Smokehouse**, **Queology**, **Poogan's Porch** or **82 Queen**, depending on where you stop.
- Return home to rest. If attending **The Witching Hour at 7:30**, eat early near the Gaillard—**Delaney** is convenient—and leave a buffer.
- Plan roughly **3–4½ miles** across the day. Shorten the outing by turning back at Rainbow Row if needed.

### Day 3 — museum or special house-and-garden tour

- Choose **IAAM** for a substantial history morning, or make the Preservation Society's **South of Broad house-and-garden tour** the main activity after confirming its time.
- If choosing IAAM, add **Liberty Square** and harbor views. Do the Aquarium on another day if you want an unhurried museum visit.
- Later, browse **lower King Street**, **Buxton Books**, **Croghan's**, **Candlefish** or the **Preservation Society Shop**. The free **Halsey Institute** is a useful alternative if its current exhibition is open.
- Dinner at your chosen reservation; **David Sedaris at 7:30** is an optional evening anchor. Otherwise consider the **City Market Night Market** or a downtown ghost walk.
- Plan roughly **2–4 miles**, depending on the tour and shopping detours.

### Day 4 — market morning and an evening out

- Start with **Marion Square Farmers Market**, preferably earlier in its 8–2 window. Pair it with **Kudu** or **La Pâtisserie**.
- Choose **The Charleston Museum + Joseph Manigault House**, **Aiken-Rhett House**, a **Candlefish workshop**, or a booked **harbor tour**. With children, consider the **Children's Museum**, **Gadsdenboro Park** or the **Miss Nelson Is Missing!** performance once you confirm the showtime.
- Keep a break at the Airbnb before evening. Halloween falls on Saturday, so a dinner reservation or an early walk-in is useful.
- Evening options: a booked **ghost walk**, the **Night Market** if operating, or Upper King drinks. Do not assume every bar is holding a ticketed Halloween party or that unannounced parties are confirmed.
- Plan roughly **2–3½ miles** before any long evening walk.

### Day 5 — brunch and a manageable finish

- Check the clock change, checkout time and luggage plan first.
- Easy brunch choices include **Sorelle Mercato**, **Holey City Bagels**, **Poogan's Porch**, **Millers**, or **Halls** with a reservation. **Harken** works only before its early close.
- If leaving early, do **Cistern Yard** and a last King Street stroll. If staying later, **Gibbes**, the **Aquarium**, or **IAAM from noon** can fill the afternoon, subject to current hours.
- The **5pm Philip Glass program** only works if your onward travel leaves room for its full runtime and the journey afterward.
- Plan roughly **½–2 miles** for a departure morning, more for an afternoon attraction. Do not carry luggage around the historic walking loops if storage can be arranged.

## Self-guided walking loops

Use the companion map to see the stops together. The Google links after the loop descriptions use a small set of anchors; they provide walking navigation between those anchors, not a narrated tour or a promise of a particular sidewalk.

**A. Market and harbor sampler — allow 2–3 hours with stops.** Home → City Market (**43**) → Waterfront Park (**54**) → Rainbow Row (**55**) → home. Roughly 2–2½ miles once you stroll through the park and market. Add coffee at Bitty & Beau's or dessert at Carmella's. This is the best first full outdoor loop.

**B. Battery and house-museum loop — allow 3–5 hours with one interior visit.** Home → Gibbes / Meeting Street (**47**) → White Point Garden (**67**) → Nathaniel Russell House (**63**) → home. Roughly 2½–3½ miles depending on your waterfront detour. Walk East Battery as well if desired. Stop for brunch or lunch near Queen Street rather than expecting many choices at the southern tip.

**C. Marion Square and northern museums — allow 2–4 hours.** Home → Marion Square (**44**) → The Charleston Museum (**48**) → Aiken-Rhett House (**50**) → home. Roughly 1½–2 miles plus museum interiors. Add Joseph Manigault House if you bought a combination ticket and have time.

**D. Campus and quieter western streets — allow 2–3 hours.** Home → Cistern Yard (**45**) → Colonial Lake (**68**) → Cathedral of St. John the Baptist (**69**) → home. Roughly 2–3 miles with a circuit of the lake. Look at the houses from public sidewalks; avoid entering gates or gardens that are not explicitly open.

**E. Upper King food and shopping — allow 2–4 hours, longer with dinner.** Home → Blue Bicycle Books (**72**) → The Ordinary (**15**) → Chubby Fish (**21**) → home. Roughly 2–3 miles. These are area anchors, not a recommendation to eat two dinners. Leon's is a further northern extension; Xiao Bao is a western detour.

**F. Coffee and Cannonborough — allow 2–3 hours.** Home → Halsey Institute (**114**) → Second State (**102**) → Cannon Park (**120**) → Holey City Bagels (**100**) → home. Treat the food stops as choices rather than required consecutive meals. Confirm the Halsey's exhibition schedule and Holey City's early closing time.

**G. Harbor outing — allow 2–4 hours plus the boat schedule.** Home → Gadsdenboro Park (**118**) → Charleston Harbor Tours (**116**) or the Water Taxi (**117**) → home. Pick one boat experience, follow the exact boarding instructions and leave time to arrive before departure.

## Additional streets worth wandering

The value of downtown walking extends beyond individual businesses. **King Street** gives you the highest concentration of retail; explore both the stretch south toward Broad and north toward Spring. **Church, Chalmers and State Streets** are useful for a French Quarter architecture-and-gallery walk. **Tradd Street** is an attractive South of Broad cross-street. **Ansonborough around Anson, Hasell and Wentworth** offers a close-to-home residential stroll. Short alleys can be interesting detours when publicly accessible, but keep to signed public routes and do not mistake a private courtyard for an open attraction. [Official Charleston historic-sites guide](https://www.charlestoncvb.com/plan-your-trip/tours-attractions~204/historic-sites~1146/location/charleston-downtown~445/)

## Practical walking notes

- **Shoes and mobility:** plan for uneven paving, occasional cobbles, narrow sidewalks and historic stairs. The distance estimates do not establish step-free access. Ask individual house museums and tour operators about the exact accessible experience; the Aquarium, IAAM and modern performance venues are different types of visits from historic houses.
- **Weather:** a trip-specific forecast is not available this far ahead. Pack comfortable walking shoes, a light layer and rain protection, then check the forecast in the week before travel. Waterfront wind can make an evening feel cooler than the streets inland.
- **Rest breaks:** Marion Square, Waterfront Park and White Point Garden are useful pauses. Buy water before the long southern loop. The city provides public restroom information, including downtown garages, parks and buildings; availability varies by location and opening time. [City visitor information](https://www.charleston-sc.gov/3427/Visitors)
- **For a tired return:** a ride back is reasonable even if you walked out. Check the current [CARTA/DASH information](https://www.ridecarta.com/) if you want a transit backup; this guide does not assume a particular route or stop remains unchanged.
- **Rain substitutions:** swap a long park loop for Gibbes, Charleston Museum, IAAM, the Aquarium, Halsey Institute, Escape in 60, a performance or a booked workshop. Museums have different last-admission times; do not wait until late afternoon to choose.
- **Groups and dietary needs:** restaurant capacity and menus vary. Small venues such as FIG, Chez Nous and Chubby Fish need more planning than a quick café. Read the current menu and contact the venue for specific allergy or access arrangements.
- **Free versus ticketed:** streets, exterior architecture, parks and ordinary browsing are largely free. Museum interiors, house tours, performances, workshops, boats and organized walks are separate purchases. Food, drinks and shopping are additional.

## Well-known Charleston outings that are not ordinary walks from this address

Keep these outside the walking plan: **Folly Beach, Sullivan's Island, Isle of Palms, Angel Oak, Boone Hall, Magnolia Plantation, Middleton Place, Drayton Hall, McLeod Plantation, Patriots Point / USS Yorktown, and Shem Creek**. They require transport or a separately arranged boat trip. **Fort Sumter itself requires a ferry**, even though its downtown visitor center and departure area are walkable. **Hampton Park and the Ravenel Bridge pedestrian approach** are longer outings beyond this guide's comfortable core; crossing the bridge adds a substantial walk beyond merely reaching it. ## Sources, map accuracy and last check

Research date: **September 17, 2026**. Source links appear with individual entries and dated events. Published hours are included where the retrieved page was specific; otherwise the guide directs you to verify the venue's current schedule. This is not a live availability check. No reservations or ticket purchases have been made.

The home location and most venue pins use the [US Census geocoder](https://geocoding.geo.census.gov/geocoder/), which interpolates street addresses and does not identify every entrance. The Aquarium uses an OpenStreetMap building location; the Fireproof Building uses [published coordinates](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fireproof_Building). Pins for the waterfront, Battery, parks and markets mark an approach or representative address, not the entire attraction.

The offline map is geographically positioned street data, not a hand-drawn schematic. The optional online layer provides more labels. Walking estimates do not reflect live closures, signal timing, entrance placement or accessibility. Use current pedestrian directions on the day.

Map software: [Leaflet](https://leafletjs.com/) 1.9.4 and [Leaflet.markercluster](https://github.com/Leaflet/Leaflet.markercluster) 1.5.3, bundled for offline viewing with their license notices.
